Chinese battery giant CATL, the world’s largest manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, has unveiled a groundbreaking new battery specifically designed for electric buses. This cutting-edge battery boasts an impressive lifespan of 15 years or 1.5 million kilometers, setting a new industry standard.
Named the Tianxing B-series, the battery is set to enter mass production soon. CATL is collaborating with 13 automakers to integrate this innovative technology into their electric buses.
The Tianxing B-series offers a remarkable energy density of 175 Wh/kg, surpassing the capabilities of existing bus batteries. Although this falls slightly short of the energy density found in batteries for passenger cars, it is a significant advancement for the bus industry. Additionally, the battery has achieved an IP69 rating, signifying its ability to withstand submersion in water for up to 72 hours, making it well-suited for challenging environments.
With the launch of its new Tianxing battery brand, CATL aims to enhance four key aspects of its battery technology: superior safety, ultra-fast charging, extended service life, and long range. The company incorporates advanced technologies, such as thermal runaway prevention, thermal insulation materials, and a dual-layer liquid cooling system, to achieve unparalleled safety levels.
By continuously introducing groundbreaking innovations, CATL solidifies its position as a leading force in the electric vehicle battery market. In April, at the Beijing Auto Show, CATL unveiled the Shenxing Plus, a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capable of achieving a range of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge and supporting 4C ultra-fast charging, allowing for an additional 600 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes of charging.
