Elon Musk announced at the 2025 World Government Summit an agreement between his company, The Boring Company, and the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to develop the “Dubai Loop” project, an underground high-speed transportation system aimed at providing a fast and efficient way to move around the city.

The experimental phase of the project will begin with the construction of a 17-kilometer network of tunnels, in which self-driving electric cars will be used to transport passengers at high speeds.

Passengers enter one of the stations and are transported directly by self-driving electric cars to the desired destination without stopping or intermediate stations, which reduces travel time and contributes to reducing traffic congestion in Dubai.

Although Musk mentioned that he envisions it as a “wormhole” through which the passenger enters and exits immediately to his desired destination, the situation will not be that ideal. The system will allow travel at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, and it is planned to be able in the first phase to transport 20,000 passengers per hour, with the possibility of increasing the capacity to 100,000 passengers in the future.

Musk pointed out that transportation by tunnels is a safer way than flying taxis, which cause noise and disturb residents, and are also affected by sandstorms, winds and rain, while underground transportation remains more practical in all circumstances. In addition, the use of electric cars makes it environmentally friendly and more sustainable.

No specific timetable has been announced for the project, and when it will be ready for use.

The Dubai Loop project represents an important step towards a future in which transportation is more convenient, efficient and environmentally friendly.
