In Hawaii, a BMW dealership has implemented a new AI-powered device to inspect cars automatically, eliminating the need for manual inspections and reducing the inspection time, while also saving car owners from waiting.

The device resembles MRI machines, as it performs a comprehensive 360-degree scan of the car and uses artificial intelligence to detect any leaks, problems, or potential malfunctions.

The device sends its report directly to supervisors for review before it is handed over to the customer. This task was previously performed by a mechanic who would photograph the car from all sides looking for defects.

The device performs the mechanic’s job in much less time, and it is also tireless and unbiased, making the inspection process more accurate, assuming that the AI that analyzes the images is good enough.

Auto factories are increasingly using robots to perform inspection and quality control tasks, and the success of this device in replacing the technician is an important indicator of the potential for AI to replace the expert eye of the inspector.
