Toyota has unveiled a new design for hydrogen cartridges that could revolutionize the way we fuel hydrogen-powered vehicles. Resembling oversized AA batteries, these sleek cartridges store hydrogen, providing a convenient way to refuel vehicles on the go.
Traditionally, hydrogen refueling has been seen as a complex and risky process due to the limited number of fueling stations and the potential hazards associated with hydrogen leaks. Toyota’s new cartridges aim to address these concerns, making hydrogen power more accessible and safe.
Beyond automotive applications, these rechargeable cartridges can also power fuel cells for various devices, such as home cooking appliances. This means that users may no longer have to worry about power outages.
While the cartridges are designed to be both stylish and durable, safety precautions should still be observed. Toyota recommends storing them in well-ventilated areas, away from direct sunlight, and avoiding any impact that could damage the casing.
Toyota will showcase these hydrogen cartridges at the Japan Mobility Bizweek from October 15–18. Initially developed by Toyota’s subsidiary, Woven, these cartridges have undergone significant improvements since their initial prototype in 2022, becoming lighter, more durable, and easier to transport.
These innovative cartridges represent a significant step forward in the adoption of hydrogen technologies for both vehicles and home appliances. By providing a convenient and stylish solution to energy storage, Toyota is accelerating the transition towards more environmentally friendly power sources.
