Samsung has announced its first lineup of 3D monitors, the Odyssey 3D, which will be available later this year in 27 and 37-inch sizes.
This gaming monitor displays 3D images for a single viewer only. It achieves this by tracking the user’s eye movement and sending different images to each eye, creating a 3D effect without the need for glasses.
The monitor is a QLED panel with a 4K resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time. It also allows users to switch between 3D and 2D modes.
Previous 3D display technologies often required users to wear special glasses. These glasses would display different colors to each eye, creating the 3D illusion. The Odyssey 3D, however, uses a new technology called light field display (LFD) that eliminates the need for glasses. It employs a series of micro-lenses, each capturing light from different angles, allowing the same scene to be viewed from multiple perspectives. This is combined with eye-tracking and view mapping technology. The eye-tracking technology uses a built-in stereo camera to monitor the movement of both eyes, while the view mapping technology constantly adjusts the image based on the eye’s position to enhance the sense of depth.
This monitor is ideal for 3D gaming and can also display 3D movies. It may also support spatial video captured by Apple’s Vision Pro headset.
