China has unveiled “Feiyi,” the world’s first unmanned aerial-submersible vehicle capable of both flying and operating underwater. This innovative amphibious aircraft features a unique design with four foldable rotors, allowing it to seamlessly transition between air and water.

The flying submarine was developed by a team of researchers from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU) and the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center (CARDC). This technology differs from the aerial drones developed by the United States, which are launched from submarines using torpedoes to reach the water’s surface. In contrast, the “Feiyi” can independently take off from a submarine, fly in the air, and then return to the submarine on its own.

When submerged, the aircraft folds its arms, making it more streamlined and reducing drag, while also enhancing its stealth capabilities. In the air, the arms extend, allowing the rotors to provide the necessary lift for flight and maneuverability.

The vehicle relies on separate propulsion systems for its aerial and aquatic operations. In the air, it uses a quadrotor system, while underwater, it depends on four thrusters.

Experimental tests have demonstrated the aircraft’s ability to navigate smoothly underwater, with diving and ascending speeds of up to 2 meters per second. In aerial mode, it achieved speeds of up to 3 meters per second.

The transition between water and air was executed smoothly, thanks to advanced systems that help overcome potential disturbances. The shift from underwater navigation to vertical flight took less than 10 seconds, after which the aircraft was able to return to the water, complete the landing process, and retract its arms in preparation for diving.

The potential applications for this aircraft are diverse, ranging from environmental monitoring and search-and-rescue missions to maritime reconnaissance for submarines. It could also serve as an effective tool for military operations, including reconnaissance and offensive missions, providing a strategic advantage in military endeavors.
